Living Faith to World Heritage
The inscription of "Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, Nakhon Si Thammarat" as a World Heritage Site under the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO.
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, Nakhon Si Thammarat, was inscribed as Thailand's 9th World Heritage Site on July 25, 2026. It is the 6th cultural heritage site and the first in Southern Thailand, marking a significant milestone for Nakhon Si Thammarat and the country.
UNESCO has recognized the Outstanding Universal Value of this heritage site based on two criteria:
- ✦ Criterion I: An outstanding center of architectural excellence from various religions and sects in Asia.
- ✦ Criterion II: A center of Buddhist faith on the Thai-Malay Peninsula for over a millennium, playing a crucial role in cultural exchange and continuous religious influence since the 8th century (Srivijaya period).
